How to drink alcohol and stay healthy

6 Quick Tips for Healthier Boozing


As health-conscious as we are, most of us enjoy drinking alcohol sometimes. Maybe it's Friday night plans for happy hour or drinks. Or maybe it’s a glass of wine or a beer with dinner every night.

Though alcohol is a poison full of empty calories, it can be fine, and even healthy, in moderation. But how much is healthy? What if you’ve had too much? Are there ways to mitigate the negative effects?


Well, first off, what are the negative effects?

Here’s the short list:

  • Increases blood pressure
  • Causes dehydration
  • Damages brain cells
  • Causes fatty liver deposits
  • Interferes with calcium absorption
  • Can cause impotence/infertility
  • Can weaken heart muscles
  • Burns through your B vitamins, especially thiamin


Obviously, that’s a scary list. But actually, if you use a few special tricks, you can mitigate or even completely avoid many of these.


Here are 6  tips recommended by doctors to stay healthy while enjoying alcohol responsibly:

1.       Take a vitamin b complex to protect your nervous system. You can find them at any grocery store or pharmacy. Follow the recommended dosage on the bottle, and take an hour before going out.

2.       Milk Thistle Extract. Also found at your grocery store or over the counter at the pharmacy. It regenerates liver cells and protects them against toxic injury. Take 500mg with your first (or only) drink of the evening. A very small percentage of the population can experience allergic reactions, so check with your doctor.

3.       Dry yeast packets (found in the baking aisle at the grocery store). They help break down the molecules of alcohol. Take 1 tsp. with your drink at home.

4.       Choose red wine when possible for the reservatrol, an antioxidant shown to improve cardiovascular health and reduce your risk of colon cancer.

5.       Do not drink wine, liquor or beer with dinner EVERY night. Take at least 2-3 nights per week off. And stay under 6 drinks per week or so.

6.       Don't drink on an empty stomach. This doesn’t mean order a pizza or buger with your alcohol, but it does mean to eat a nice healthy meal right before going out. Or snack on something healthy. Just keep your portions in check to avoid gaining fat.


You don’t need to follow all of these tips, but follow tips 5 and 6 along with one or two of the others, and you’ll drink happily and healthfully for the rest of your life!
